What to Do with a House Full of Stuff After Someone Passes
Take a breath first
You just lost someone. The house can wait.
I say this because every family I work with feels pressure to deal with the house immediately. The mortgage, the utilities, the HOA. But most of that stuff can run on autopilot for a few weeks while you grieve. Don't let urgency push you into decisions you'll regret.
Get the family on the same page
Before you touch anything, make sure everyone who has a stake agrees on the plan. Who wants what? Is Aunt Carol expecting the china? Does your brother want Dad's tools?
Sort out the sentimental items first. We've seen families argue at our sales because somebody sold something another person wanted. It's avoidable if you handle it early.
Walk through and take inventory
Don't start filling trash bags. Walk through room by room and get a sense of what's there. You'd be surprised what's actually worth money. That old cast iron in the kitchen. The tools in the garage. Vintage furniture that looks dated to you but collectors pay real money for.
Take photos as you go. It helps when you're talking to an estate sale company later.
Decide what to sell, donate, and toss
Roughly, it breaks down like this:
•Sell: anything with value. Furniture, art, tools, kitchen stuff, collectibles. An estate sale handles all of this.
•Donate: clothes, books, everyday dishes, things that are useful but not valuable. Goodwill and Habitat for Humanity ReStore are good options in the Willamette Valley.
•Toss: broken things, stained mattresses, expired food, personal documents (shred these).
Call a professional
A professional estate sale company can come in, price everything, run the sale, coordinate donations for the leftovers, and leave the house empty and clean. We do this across Portland, Salem, and the whole Willamette Valley.
The consultation is free. We'll walk through with you, give you realistic numbers, and tell you honestly if a sale makes sense or if donation and cleanout is the better path.
Reach out whenever you're ready. There's no rush.
